About the Gun

Ruger SP101 revolvers are smaller framed guns chambered in various calibers from .22 LR up to the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge. They also feature a smaller Ruger cushioned grip system with no exposed metal at the back strap for shooter comfort, the patented triple-locking cylinder mechanism that securely locks the cylinder into the frame at the front, rear, and bottom, and a stainless steel frame that has no weakening side plates. Ruger SP101 revolvers come in spurred and spurless hammer versions and take down easily with no special tools.

About the Cartridge

Smith & Wesson introduced this cartridge for its heavy-frame revolver. Ammunition was developed by Winchester in cooperation with Smith & Wesson. Using a lengthened and strengthened version of the .38 Special case, the .357 Magnum was rapidly accepted by hunters and law enforcement. At the time of its introduction, it was claimed to easily pierce the body panels of automobiles and crack engine blocks. While it has less power than the .44 Magnum, it compares favorably to the 10mm Norma and .45 ACP, but with better armor penetration. Today factories offer over fifty different loadings in this caliber.

Excellent Snub Nose
By Diogenes_the_GunSlinger on 14 Jun 2023
To me a well made snub nose revolver is a thing of beauty and this one is no exception. The Sp101 has some real heft to it being a solid stainless frame. As someone who prefers a steel gun this is ideal but if you looking for a pocket probably not the best choice unless you have well made garments and a good belt. The stock grips aren't bad at all with .38 special but full power .357 is another matter. While it can be made manageable a hot .357 out of this pocket rocket is not for the faint of heart. With hot .357 its louder than some rifles I've shot and the fireball is absolutely incredible. Once at an indoor range everyone else stopped shooting when they saw the muzzle blast of this beauty! One guy was astonished such a little gun made so much noise. With .38s it's a wonderfully sweet shooter and for .357 in a small package you can't do much better.

Love it, hate the stock grips
By Zoidberg2020 on 14 Mar 2023
I've owned one of these for several years now. I work in the mountains of rural Nevada and wanted something lightweight that could handle a mountian lion. I carry this sooooooo much more than I shoot it and since I'm hiking for a living, weight really matters. As impressive as some of the S&W scandium framed stuff is, I just couldn't justify carrying such an expensive firearm only for it to get beat up everyday. This purchased used for $400 was just the ticket. Until I shot it. The stock grip is terrible for handling recoil and smacks your ring finger with every shot. A $30 set of hogue grips TRANSFORMED this gun into a pleasant little hand cannon. Yes, if your grip isn't where it needs to be, you'll pay the price but for normal range shooting, its absolutely delightful. Reliability has been spotless and the target sights are great. 9.5/10
