About the Cartridge

This cartridge was introduced along with the Luger semi-automatic pistol. The pistol and cartridge was first adopted by the German Navy in 1904 and then by the German Army in 1908. This cartridge has since been adopted by the military of practically every non-Communist power. It has become the most popular and widely-used handgun cartridge in the world. Performance wise, the 9 mm cartridge has somewhat more power than the .38 Special but falls well short of the .357 Magnum.

I can't say enough good things about the Shield. It is my Every Day Carry piece and I don't think I would ever change that fact. I carry it with an 8 round mag + 1 in the pipe with a spare 8 rounder or 7 round mag as a spare. It is very accurate, outstanding quality of manufacture, feels great in the hand, easy to clean, and it carries well. One of the best gun buying decisions I ever made...no joke.

My CCW

I have a Glock 22 which is the only other polymer pistol that I have shot. For some reason I have better accuracy with this pistol. I think the grip angle combined with the long trigger prep of the G22 causes me some issues. The trigger prep on this gun is very slight which is what I prefer. (I do not blame the G22. It is a poor workman who blames his tools.) But, I'm sure with practice I can learn how to operate it better. However, I prefer the S&W M&P 9 Shield due to its size and the feel of trigger prep/press. I carry IWB in the appendix position. Even when I am sitting at my desk it is not uncomfortable for the most part. I do have to shift it with a slight side shift from time to time if I am sitting for long periods due to it pressing on my lower abdomen. I do not have any comfort issues with it when I'm standing. I am using a Precision Holster made in Placerville, CA which only adds 3/16" to the total width. I bought this gun brand-new, and have shot about 3,000 rounds or more

I've owned other polymer CCW handguns, but this is by far my favorite. Very reliable and conceals well. Lower recoil than the others.
