Remington Arms Company, Inc., headquartered in Madison, N.C., designs, produces and sells sporting goods products for the hunting and shooting sports markets, as well as military, government and law enforcement markets. Founded in 1816 in upstate New York, the Company is one of the nation’s oldest continuously operating manufacturers. Remington is the only U.S. manufacturer of both firearms and ammunition products and one of the largest domestic producers of shotguns and rifles. Founded by Eliphalet Remington II in Litchfield, NY in the early 1800's, he eventually established a factory in Ilion, NY next to the Erie Canal in 1828. Together with his sons Philo, Samuel, and Eliphalet III they pioneered many improvements in firearms manufacturing. Corporate offices were moved to Madison, NC in 1996. DuPont owned a controlling interest in Remington from 1933-1993, when the company was sold to Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, a New York City based finance company. The Mayfield, KY plant opened in 1997. On May 31st, 2007, a controlling interest in the company was sold to Cerberus Capital. On 28 July 2020, Remington Arms filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and its assets were divided and sold.
