Hammerli Arms was founded in 1863 in Lenzburg, Switzerland, initially producing rifle barrels for the Swiss Army. The company expanded into sporting rifles and shotguns in the early 1880s. By the early 20th century, rising interest in handgun competition prompted their shift toward precision target pistols. Post-World War II, Hammerli focused on Olympic and ISSF disciplines, developing the Model 100 series and subsequent semi-automatic .22 LR platforms that achieved notable success in international events through the late 20th century. Ownership transitioned through SIG Sauer before acquisition by the Umarex/Walther group around 2006, with production relocating to Germany and a reduced emphasis on traditional competition handguns. Hammerli has historically offered around 15–20 distinct pistol models across the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily focused on target and competition shooting. Most were produced in the mid-to-late 20th century under Swiss manufacture in Lenzburg, with limited new handgun introductions after the brand's acquisition by Walther/Umarex and shift to German production.
