About the Cartridge

This cartridge was developed as a joint venture between Winchester and Smith & Wesson. It was an effort to to create a cartridge with the same power as the 10mm Norma round that the FBI had just started using, but in a shorter case. The shorter cartridge would facilitate accuracy and allow use of a smaller, more comfortable grip frame. The .40 S&W has become the cartridge of choice for many law enforcement agencies in the United States.

Smooth like silk . . .

Mine is a 96-G, Decocker Only version in 10mm Short (aka 40S&W), 4.9" barrel - No Safety or rail. Beretta's mfg & fitment processes become obvious the moment you rack the silky smooth slide, and pull the trigger. In Verifying the Serial Number, I found that This pistol was part of a shipment originally issued in 2000 to the Florida Highway Patrol, and has a tiny Police Identifier stamp(a tiny Badge) on the trigger guard. I purchased mine on the online auctions at a great price, it was accompanied by a '9mm Conversion barrel', and operates perfectly and accurately with a variety of ammo grains in both 9mm & 40S&W modes, it eats everything I feed it! Its construction shares most parts with the Model 92FS frame. The Beretta 96G is perfect for home defense or as a side-arm, but it's total length doesn't necessarily make it a primary candidate for IWB concealed carry, though I do take it along in a shoulder holster occasionally.
