About the Gun

The Thunder 40 was the first Bersa pistol chambered for .40 S&W. Due to the 1994 U.S. ban on magazines exceeding 10 rounds capacity, the full-size Bersa Thunder 40 with a magazine design capacity of 13 was initially unable to enter the U.S. market. Subsequently, Bersa introduced a compact version, the MiniThunder 40, in 2000 that met the ban restrictions. Since the ban has lifted both versions became available in the US.

Production

Production of this firearm began in the early 2000s, with the ultra-compact variant being introduced around 2005. It continues to be manufactured, reflecting ongoing demand for this design in various markets worldwide.

Analysis

This .40 S&W semi-automatic pistol offers a solid option for shooters seeking a balance of performance and affordability. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, making it suitable for both defensive and recreational use. The ergonomics are well-designed, with a grip that accommodates a variety of hand sizes, providing a secure hold during extended shooting sessions. Reliability is a key asset, as it functions smoothly with minimal malfunctions under standard conditions. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome due to a more complex disassembly process, which may frustrate less experienced users. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts can be challenging, potentially leading to delays in repairs. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 5-6 pounds in single-action, though it feels heavier in double-action mode. Felt recoil is manageable but noticeable, particularly for those unaccustomed to the .40 caliber’s snap.
