About the Gun

The Thunder 9 was the first gun made in the Thunder series of pistols from Bersa. It was introduced into the US market only after the lifting of the Clinton-era ban in 2004. Addressing both the requirements of the ban and surging consumer demand for a concealable carry pistol, the smaller Thunder 9 Ultra Compact was introduced in 2000. Patterned closely after the earlier, double-stack 9mm Model 90, the Thunder 9 features an aluminum alloy frame for lightness, with the rest of the pistol's metal parts made of 4140 steel.

Production

Production of this firearm began in the early 1990s and continues to the present day. It remains a popular choice among enthusiasts, with manufacturing primarily taking place in Argentina by a well-known company.

Analysis

This 9mm semi-automatic pistol offers a compelling option for shooters seeking a reliable duty or personal defense firearm. Its accuracy is noteworthy, delivering consistent performance at typical engagement distances, while the ergonomic grip design accommodates a variety of hand sizes, enhancing control during extended use. Reliability is a strong suit, with the firearm functioning well under diverse conditions, even with varied ammunition types. The trigger pull is smooth in double-action mode, though it can feel somewhat heavy for some users at around 10 pounds, transitioning to a lighter single-action pull. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most shooters with proper grip technique. On the downside, maintenance can be cumbersome due to a more complex disassembly process, and sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges in certain regions. Additionally, some users might find the overall weight less ideal for concealed carry.
