About the Gun

Manufactured through the 1950s at the Cugir Arsenal in Romania, this TT pistol is functionally and mechanically identical to the Russian and Polish made TT-33. Cugir Tokarevs distinguish themselves from Russian and Polish models through the embossed “RSR” (Romanian Socialist Republic) grip panels, and the simplified rear slide serrations. US importations had a frame mounted trigger safety added to them.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1952 at the Cugir Arsenal in Romania, continuing through the late 1950s. It was manufactured as a licensed variant under the Soviet design, with assembly primarily for military and export purposes during that period.

Analysis

This semi-automatic pistol, chambered in a potent 7.62x25 cartridge, offers notable performance for its design era. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, thanks to a well-engineered barrel and sighting system. Reliability is a key asset, as the mechanism functions effectively even under harsh conditions, provided proper care is maintained. Ergonomically, the grip fits many hands adequately, though some users may find it less intuitive compared to modern designs. The trigger pull is firm, averaging around 5-6 pounds, which can feel heavy for those accustomed to lighter pulls. Felt recoil is sharp due to the powerful round, potentially challenging for newer shooters. On the downside, maintenance can be cumbersome, requiring attention to detail, and sourcing replacement parts poses a significant hurdle. Overall, it’s a solid historical piece with practical strengths, tempered by age-related limitations.
