About the Gun

The TZ-75 Series 88 is Tanfoglio’s 1988 update to the original pre-88 TZ-75 platform. It retains the all-steel frame and slide construction while introducing several key changes: relocation of the manual safety to the frame (replacing the slide-mounted decocker), adoption of a rounded trigger guard, and provision for higher standard magazine capacity. These modifications provided users with a more conventional thumb safety operation and improved grip comfort compared to the earlier model. The Series 88 served as a direct transitional design between the initial FIE-imported TZ-75 and the subsequent EAA Witness series, preserving broad compatibility with early CZ-75 magazines and holsters. Blued and chrome finishes were both offered during production.

Production

The Series 88 update appeared around 1988, with FIE handling imports into the late 1980s/early 1990s overlap period before the design fully transitioned to other importers like Excam (as TA-90) and eventually EAA Witness branding around 1990–1991.

Analysis

The Series 88 maintains strong appeal for modern shooters through its durable all-steel build, smooth DA/SA trigger, and excellent natural pointability that rivals more expensive CZ-75 variants. It handles standard 9mm loads with manageable recoil and accepts common upgrades such as recoil springs, guide rods, or modern sights with minimal fitting. Magazine and holster compatibility remains high with early CZ-75 and later Witness parts, providing broad support options. Collectors value the Series 88 as a late-1980s transitional piece in high-capacity steel-frame evolution, with chrome-finished examples particularly sought for superior wear resistance and period competition association. Specific frame-mounted safety components can be harder to source today, but overall platform availability keeps these pistols serviceable. Current market pricing in excellent condition positions them as a cost-effective choice for reliable classic 9mm performance.
