About the Gun

The success of HKs G3 Automatic Rifle led to the desire for the company to produce handguns. An offshoot of the G3 program was to produce a handgun that featured the roller locking system that was so successful in the G3. The P9 was that pistol. The P9S was a double-action derivative of the P9, easily identified by the trigger guard and the position of the trigger lever. The trigger guard was altered in the 1970s to suit the fashionable two-handed grip, acquiring a reverse curve in the front edge.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1968 and continued until 1978. It was primarily manufactured during the 1970s, with various configurations produced in that decade by a well-known German manufacturer.

Analysis

This 9mm pistol, a product of German engineering, offers notable precision due to its fixed barrel design, which enhances shot consistency across various ranges. The ergonomic grip fits comfortably in most hands, providing a secure hold during extended use. Reliability is a key asset, with the firearm performing well under diverse conditions, even with minimal upkeep. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome, requiring specific tools and knowledge for disassembly. Availability of replacement parts may pose challenges, particularly for those outside major markets, potentially leading to delays in repairs. The trigger pull is smooth but on the heavier side, averaging around 6-7 pounds in double-action mode, which might not suit all shooters. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users, though those sensitive to kick may notice it during rapid fire. Overall, it’s a dependable choice with some practical considerations for ownership.

Awesome old school single stack

With its fixed barrel, accuracy is superb, and the roller delay system -- unique in pistols but shared with the MP5/MP5K and others -- makes recoil mild and double taps a breeze. Find a solid example now, as prices are only going up (sharply for NOS/NIB examples). For a shooter, find a later model with the improved feed ramp (and slightly different barrel/spring configuration).

With its fixed barrel, the P9S is super accurate, and the unique roller delay system is unique in pistols (scaled down system from HK's earlier weapons). Manual of operation is a little funky, which only adds to its charm. Already a classic, find one in good condition and keep it that way, and it'll only appreciate in value.
