Analysis

The P224 represented SIG Sauer’s attempt to create a subcompact metal-frame DA/SA pistol that retained double-stack magazine capacity in service calibers while offering a smaller overall footprint for concealed carry. It combined the short-recoil locked-breech operating system and alloy frame of the P-series with a very compact grip and slide, allowing compatibility with higher-capacity P229 magazines using a sleeve. The various finishes and treatments (SAS for snag-free carry, Extreme for tactical appearance, Equinox and Nickel for aesthetic options) addressed different user preferences during its short production life from 2012 to 2016. Although mechanically sound and accurate for its size, the P224 saw relatively low commercial success and was discontinued as the market shifted toward striker-fired polymer pistols. It remains a distinct and somewhat overlooked compact option within the broader P220/P-series family.
