About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this firearm with the specified features began in 2006 and continued through 2015. It was part of a specialized lineup during that period, reflecting unique design choices for that era.

Analysis

This firearm in .357 SIG caliber offers notable strengths for shooters seeking a balance of power and control. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent performance at various ranges, while the ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip for extended use, accommodating a wide range of hand sizes. Reliability is a key asset, with the pistol functioning well under diverse conditions, making it a dependable choice for both duty and personal defense. The double-action-only trigger pull, averaging around 6.5 pounds, provides a smooth and predictable experience, though some may find it heavier than preferred. Felt recoil is manageable but can be sharp due to the potent caliber, potentially challenging for less experienced users. On the downside, maintenance requires attention to detail, as certain components demand regular care. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts can be less straightforward compared to more common platforms, which may frustrate some owners.
