About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this firearm with the specified features began in 2005 and continued until around 2015. It was part of a specialized line designed for law enforcement, featuring a unique double-action-only mechanism during that period.

Analysis

This 9mm double-action-only pistol offers a consistent trigger pull averaging around 6.5 pounds, providing a smooth and predictable experience that aids in maintaining accuracy during rapid fire. The ergonomics are well-designed, with a grip that accommodates a variety of hand sizes, promoting comfort and control. Reliability is a key asset, as the firearm functions dependably under diverse conditions, making it a solid choice for both range use and personal defense. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most shooters, and contributes to quicker follow-up shots. However, maintenance can be somewhat involved due to the complexity of the internal mechanism, requiring diligent care to ensure longevity. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges for some users, potentially leading to delays in repairs. While it serves a broad audience effectively, those unfamiliar with double-action systems might need time to adapt to its operation.
