About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Analysis

This .40 S&W semi-automatic pistol is a notable option for shooters seeking a balance of performance and practicality. Its accuracy is commendable, with a well-designed barrel and sight system that aids in consistent shot placement. Ergonomically, the grip offers a comfortable hold for a wide range of hand sizes, enhanced by customizable grip panels. Reliability is a key strength, as it functions smoothly under varied conditions with proper care. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single-action mode, providing good control. However, felt recoil can be sharp due to the potent caliber, which may challenge less experienced users. On the downside, maintenance requires attention to detail, as disassembly can be intricate for novices. Additionally, sourcing specific replacement parts may pose difficulties in some regions, potentially delaying repairs. Overall, it’s a solid choice for those prepared to manage its nuances.
