About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Analysis

This firearm in 357 SIG caliber offers a compelling package for shooters seeking a balance of power and control. Its accuracy is noteworthy, delivering consistent performance at various ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, the grip fits a wide range of hand sizes, enhancing comfort during extended sessions. Reliability is a strong point, with the design handling high-pressure rounds without frequent malfunctions under proper care. However, maintenance can be demanding, requiring meticulous attention to keep it in peak condition. Parts availability may pose challenges, particularly for less common components. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single action, though some users might find the double-action pull heavier than preferred. Felt recoil is manageable for experienced shooters but could be sharp for those unaccustomed to the potent caliber, necessitating proper technique to maintain control.
