About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this specific model with the unique anchor engraving began in 2004 and continued through 2015. It was crafted as a tribute to naval service, with limited runs during those years, reflecting its specialized design and historical significance.

Analysis

This 9mm semi-automatic pistol, designed for naval special operations, offers notable performance in several key areas. Its accuracy is commendable, with a tight grouping at standard defensive ranges, thanks to a well-engineered barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, the grip design accommodates a variety of hand sizes, providing a secure hold that enhances control during rapid fire. Reliability is a strong point, as it functions consistently even under harsh conditions, with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring meticulous cleaning to prevent corrosion, especially in saltwater environments. Parts availability may pose a challenge for civilian users, as some components are less common in the general market. The trigger pull is smooth with a crisp break, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single action, while the felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most shooters with proper technique.
