About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this specific firearm configuration began in the early 2000s, with notable manufacturing runs during 2005 to 2010. It was primarily produced in limited batches, reflecting its specialized design, before being phased out for newer models in the following years.

Analysis

This .40 S&W semi-automatic pistol offers a robust platform for shooters seeking precision and dependability. Its accuracy is noteworthy, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. The ergonomics are a key asset, with a grip that accommodates various hand sizes, enhancing control during extended sessions. Reliability is another strong point, as it cycles smoothly with a wide range of ammunition under diverse conditions. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring meticulous cleaning to prevent wear on certain components. Availability of replacement parts may also pose a challenge for some users, potentially leading to delays in repairs. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single-action, though some may find the double-action pull heavier than preferred. Felt recoil is moderate for the caliber, manageable with proper technique, though newer shooters might notice a learning curve.
