About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this model with unique features began in the late 1990s and continued into the early 2000s. Specific dates may vary based on serial numbers and factory records, but it was generally available during this period before being discontinued.

Analysis

This 9mm sport pistol from a well-regarded manufacturer demonstrates notable precision, making it a strong choice for competitive shooting or range practice. Its ergonomic design offers a comfortable grip, accommodating a variety of hand sizes with ease, while the balance aids in steady handling during extended sessions. Reliability is a key asset, with consistent performance across thousands of rounds under proper care. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single action, providing a predictable break that enhances accuracy. Felt recoil is moderate, well-managed by the pistol’s weight and design, suitable for most shooters. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat intricate, requiring attention to detail for disassembly and cleaning. Availability of replacement parts may pose challenges in certain regions. Additionally, some users might find the overall size less ideal for concealed carry purposes.
