About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Analysis

This 9mm competition-grade handgun offers exceptional accuracy, thanks to its well-engineered barrel and precise sight system, making it a strong choice for precision shooting. The ergonomics are thoughtfully designed, with a grip that accommodates a wide range of hand sizes, enhancing control during extended sessions. Reliability is a key asset, as it consistently performs under demanding conditions with proper care. The trigger pull is crisp and light, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single-action mode, which aids in maintaining shot consistency. Felt recoil is moderate, well-managed by the firearm’s weight and balance, reducing fatigue over time. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat intricate, requiring attention to detail for optimal function. Parts availability may pose challenges for some users, and the design might not suit those preferring a lighter frame for everyday carry. Overall, it’s a capable option for competitive shooters.
