About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this specific firearm variant began in 2010, with limited runs continuing through 2015. It was crafted as a premium model, often tailored for competitive shooting, and remains a sought-after piece among enthusiasts for its precision design.

Analysis

This 9mm pistol is a notable choice for shooters seeking precision and control. Its accuracy is exceptional, thanks to a well-balanced design and a crisp trigger pull averaging around 4.5 pounds in single-action mode, which enhances shot placement. The ergonomics are thoughtfully executed, with a grip that accommodates various hand sizes, promoting comfort during extended range sessions. Reliability is a strong suit, as it consistently performs under diverse conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. Felt recoil is mild for its caliber, aiding in quicker follow-up shots. However, maintenance can be somewhat involved, requiring attention to detail for optimal function. Parts availability may pose challenges for some users, particularly outside major markets, and the design might not suit those preferring lighter carry options due to its full-size frame. Overall, it’s a capable tool for serious shooters.
