About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1984, with various updates over the years. Models matching these specific features were primarily manufactured between the late 1990s and early 2000s, continuing into the present with minor variations depending on customization.

Analysis

This firearm in the .357 caliber offers a compelling package for shooters seeking a balance of power and control. Its accuracy is noteworthy, delivering tight groupings at moderate ranges due to a well-engineered barrel and sighting system. The ergonomics are thoughtfully designed, with a grip that accommodates a variety of hand sizes, promoting a secure hold during extended sessions. Reliability is a strong suit, as it consistently cycles under diverse conditions with proper care. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring regular attention to ensure optimal performance. Parts availability may pose challenges for some users, particularly for less common components. The trigger pull is crisp, with a smooth break that aids precision, though it might feel slightly heavy for those accustomed to lighter mechanisms. Felt recoil is manageable but noticeable, given the potent cartridge, requiring a firm grip to maintain control during rapid fire.
