About the Gun

Designed for the U.S. Army and carried by U.S. Navy SEALs, Texas Rangers and many other elite military and law enforcement professionals, the SIG Sauer P226 is a full-sized service-type pistol chambered for the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG. Its design is based on the P220. Originally, the P226 slide was comprised of three different pieces of steel that were bent into shape using a mandrel. Beginning in 1996, production was shifted to CNC machining, and the slide was made from a single piece of stainless steel. This resulted in a stronger slide, which was necessary to chamber the more powerful .40 S&W and .357 SIG cartridges.

Production

Production of this specific model with unique naval markings began in 2011. It continues to be manufactured as a tribute to elite forces, with consistent output through the present, reflecting its enduring design and specialized purpose.

Analysis

This 9mm full-size pistol is a notable option for shooters seeking a duty-grade firearm with proven performance. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent shot placement across various ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, it fits comfortably in most hands, with a grip that supports extended use without fatigue. Reliability is a key asset, functioning smoothly even under adverse conditions with proper care. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds in single-action mode, providing good control. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users, aiding in quick follow-up shots. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring meticulous attention to prevent wear on critical components. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges due to limited availability in some regions. It’s a solid choice, though not without considerations for long-term upkeep and user-specific needs.
