About the Gun

The Croatian made XD pistol represents Springfield Armory's entry into the polymer-frame striker-fired pistol market. Although Springfield Armory introduced the XD in 2002, an earlier incarnation of the design known as the HS2000 had been independently imported into the US three years before. The XD model introduced many manufacturing improvements that have given the pistol a reputation for reliability and accuracy. While often compared to the GLock, the XD has a distinctly different trigger action that includes a unique 1911-style grip safety, and both a cocked status indicator and a loaded chamber indicator.

Production

This firearm was produced by Springfield Armory between 2002 and 2010. It was part of a specialized line featuring unique performance enhancements, catering to enthusiasts seeking improved control and reduced recoil during shooting.

Analysis

This .40 S&W pistol offers a compelling package for shooters seeking a balance of performance and control. Its ported barrel effectively reduces muzzle rise, aiding in quicker follow-up shots and maintaining accuracy during rapid fire. The ergonomic grip design fits a wide range of hand sizes, enhancing comfort and control under stress. Reliability is a key asset, with consistent performance across various ammunition types and conditions. The trigger pull, averaging around 6 pounds, provides a predictable break, though some may find it slightly heavy for precision work. Felt recoil is notably manageable, thanks to the porting and weight distribution, making it suitable for extended range sessions. However, maintenance can be cumbersome due to the ported design, as carbon buildup requires diligent cleaning. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges for some users, potentially limiting long-term support for repairs or customization.
