About the Gun

The Taurus PT640 is a hammer-fired, polymer-framed subcompact with a bobbed, spurless hammer recessed into the rear of the slide and a safety/decock lever that permits cocked-and-locked or conventional DA/SA carry. It features a one-piece polymer grip module with aggressive checkering, a short integral Picatinny rail, and a loaded-chamber indicator. Part of the Millennium Pro series, the PT640 was designed purely for deep concealment while retaining full-size .40 S&W power in a lightweight, snag-free package that appealed to budget-conscious concealed carriers and plainclothes officers.

Analysis

Despite its low price and light 25 oz weight, the PT640 handles .40 S&W recoil better than most subcompacts of its era, thanks to a low bore axis and surprisingly ergonomic grip shape. The double-action trigger is long and heavy but consistent, while single-action breaks cleanly at roughly 4–5 lb. Practical accuracy is solid inside 15 yards. The glaring weakness is the widely publicized drop-safety defect present across the entire 2004–2013 production run, which ultimately triggered a class-action settlement and the model’s discontinuation in favor of the redesigned G2 series.
