Analysis

The pre-1999 Taurus Model 66 variants provided a six-shot capacity in a medium-frame revolver, with early examples employing a hammer block safety system. This design positioned the Model 66 as a cost-effective alternative in the .357 Magnum segment, drawing from established patterns while incorporating features like wood grips and polished finishes. The transition around 1999 involved adopting a seven-shot cylinder to increase capacity, alongside a shift to a transfer bar safety mechanism, enhancing reliability in line with evolving industry standards for drop safety. Post-1999 models built on this updated frame, which had been enlarged in the early 1990s for improved durability under magnum loads.
