About the Gun

This is a reproduction of the first 'ejectorless' or what is now known as the Sheriff's Model introduced in 1882. The vast majority of the Sheriff's Model (also called the Storekeeper’s Model) sixguns were made with 3.5 or 4 inch barrels. The short barrel was designed to speed up the draw, and to make the gun a bit easier to carry, or to conceal. However, some Sheriff's Models were even manufactured with 7.5 inch barrels.

Production

Production of this specific firearm configuration occurred between 1878 and 1912 in the United States. These models were crafted during a period when such designs were popular among law enforcement and civilians alike for their reliability and compact size.

Analysis

This revolver, chambered in .44-40 Win, offers a blend of historical design and practical performance that appeals to enthusiasts of classic firearms. Its accuracy is commendable, particularly at moderate ranges, thanks to a well-aligned barrel and sights that facilitate precise shot placement. The ergonomics are suited for most users, with a grip that provides a secure hold during firing. Reliability is a strong point, as the mechanism functions smoothly under typical conditions with proper care. However, maintenance can be demanding, requiring regular attention to prevent wear on older components. Parts availability poses a challenge, often necessitating specialized sources or custom work. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4-5 pounds, which aids control, though the felt recoil can be sharp, especially for shooters unaccustomed to this caliber. Overall, it’s a solid choice for those valuing tradition, provided they’re prepared for its upkeep demands.
