Mauser was a German arms manufacturer, maker of a line of bolt-action rifles and pistols from the 1870s on through the 20th century. Their designs were initially built for the German armed forces but have been exported and licensed to a number of countries through the years, as well as being popular civilian firearms. In the late twentieth century, Mauser continued to make primarily sporting and hunting rifles. SIG (San Swiss Arms AG), acquired part of Mauser in 1999. This civil arms division was split off from the Mauser group, forming Mauser Jagdwaffen GmbH, which roughly translates to Mauser Hunting Rifles Ltd.. SIG recently made a Mauser branded M2 Pistol in 2000.
