About the Gun

The A-60 is a compact DA/SA blowback pistol in the Walther PP pattern, with a double-stack magazine, an ambidextrous slide-mounted safety, and an exposed hammer. Standard guns are blued steel with black plastic grips, a fixed front sight, and an adjustable rear sight. It is the high-capacity companion to the single-stack Constable.

Production ran from 1986 through 1991.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $400. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $250–$350.

Analysis

Astra introduced the A-60 in 1986 as a double-stack update of the Model 5000 Constable, the Walther PP-style pistol it had built since the mid-1960s. The Constable already had a DA/SA lock and a slide safety; the A-60 widened the grip for a staggered magazine and made that safety ambidextrous. Hogg lists the start as 1987. It sat alongside the single-action A-50 and the later Constable II rather than replacing the whole Constable line at once. U.S. importation of the A-60 ran through 1991. Astra closed in the late 1990s, so the gun had a short commercial life and no major service contract behind it. Used examples trade as inexpensive PP-pattern .380 Auto pistols; magazines and small parts are harder to find than for the Walther guns they copy.
