About the Gun

The A-80 is a medium all-steel DA/SA locked-breech service pistol with a double-stack magazine, a heel magazine release, and a frame-mounted decocker. There is no slide safety. Standard guns are blued, with black plastic grips and three-dot combat sights. It is Astra’s SIG P220-pattern duty pistol of the 1980s.

Production ran from 1982 through 1989.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $450. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $250–$400.

Analysis

Astra introduced the A-80 in 1982 as its first SIG-pattern service pistol, after late-1970s prototypes and Spanish army trials that did not lead to adoption. The layout follows the P220—linkless Browning lock, left-side decocker, firing-pin block—but uses a double-stack magazine and a heel catch. .45 Auto guns were among the first SIG-style pistols in that caliber with a nine-round double-stack magazine. About 27,700 A-80s were built before the line moved on. The A-90 of 1985 added a slide safety to the same frame. The A-100 of 1990 dropped that safety, kept the decocker, and switched to a button magazine release. Used A-80s trade as early-family steel service pistols; magazines and small parts are limited.
