About the Gun

The Constable is a compact all-steel DA/SA blowback pistol with a single-stack magazine, an exposed hammer, and a slide-mounted safety that also decocks. Standard guns are blued, with black plastic grips and an adjustable rear sight. It is Astra’s Walther PP-pattern pocket pistol, sold in Europe as the Model 5000.

Production ran from 1969 through 1991.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $250. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $225–$350.

Analysis

Astra announced the Model 5000 in 1969 as a PP-pattern follow-on to the Falcon line. The lockwork is DA/SA with a slide safety/decocker, but the slide comes off a frame latch above the trigger guard rather than by the Walther method, and the gun has a separate slide stop. U.S. guns were marked Constable. The same envelope ran in .22 LR, .32 Auto, and .380 Auto. The longer-barreled Constable Sport, the single-action A-50, and the double-stack A-60 are separate models. Regular Constable production ran into the early 1990s. Used guns trade as affordable PP-pattern pocket pistols; magazines and small parts are limited.
