About the Gun

The Model 44 is a large S&W-pattern DA/SA revolver with a six-shot swing-out cylinder, a shrouded ejector rod, and an adjustable rear sight. Standard guns are 6 in, with checkered wood grips. The line was cataloged in blued carbon steel and stainless steel.

Analysis

Astra introduced this large-frame revolver in 1980 as Models 41, 44, and 45, the number matching the caliber. The lock is a scaled-up Smith & Wesson pattern: solid frame, left-side push-forward cylinder latch, and a hammer block. .41 Rem Mag was dropped first. .44 Rem Mag and .45 Colt ran through the mid-1980s; stainless .44 Rem Mag guns are the ones most often seen today. Used examples trade as Spanish N-frame-size Magnums; parts are limited.
