About the Gun

The 960 is a medium-to-large S&W-pattern DA/SA service revolver with a six-shot swing-out cylinder, a ribbed barrel, a shrouded ejector rod, and an adjustable rear sight. Standard guns are blued steel with checkered wood grips. It is a heavy .38 Spl duty revolver; many examples now on the market are former police guns.

Production ran from 1972 through 1995.

Market value

MSRP at production was around $200. Current used market value for examples in good to very good condition ranges $250–$400.

Analysis

Astra introduced the 960 in the early 1970s as a .38 Spl revolver on its Magnum-size frame. The lock uses a transfer bar and an adjustable mainspring. Four- and six-inch barrels were cataloged. Spanish police issued the 4 in gun in numbers, which is why surplus 960s still turn up with holster wear. Production ran into the mid-1990s. Used guns trade as heavy Spanish service revolvers; parts are limited.
