About the Gun

In production between 1991 and 1998, the BDM (or Browning Dual Mode) pistol had the unique distinction of being manufactured solely in North America by Browning. The term "Browning Dual Mode" refers to the ability to switch the pistol between double-action/single-action(DA/SA) and double-action-only (DAO) modes of operation via a slotted lever on the left side of the slide. Features include an ambidextrous frame-mounted safety/decocker lever and checkered wrap-around plastic grips.

Production

Production of this firearm under the Practical model designation occurred from 1997 to 1998. It was a limited run, reflecting a specific design variant during that brief period before discontinuation.

Analysis

This 9mm pistol offers a solid performance for shooters seeking a reliable semi-automatic handgun. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent results at moderate ranges, making it suitable for both casual target practice and defensive use. The ergonomic design provides a comfortable grip, accommodating a variety of hand sizes with ease, which enhances control during extended shooting sessions. Reliability is a key asset, as it functions well under diverse conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome, requiring more effort than some comparable models due to its design intricacies. Availability of replacement parts may also pose a challenge for long-term ownership. The trigger pull is smooth, averaging around 5-6 pounds in double-action mode, offering a predictable break. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users, though less experienced shooters might find it slightly sharp during rapid fire.
