About the Gun

Caracal claims their polymer-framed pistol, designed by a team led by Austrian Wilhelm Bubits, is the most simple in the world with a total of just 28 parts. Most of those parts are contained in a modular unit that pulls out of the polymer frame. The internal rails travel nearly the whole length of the slide to avoid frame flex and promote accuracy. The metal magazine holds 18 rounds of 9mm ammo. The magazine catch is ambidextrous, and there is no manual safety or decocker. The trigger incorporates a Glock-style safety which combines with two other internal safeties to make the gun drop safe. The loaded chamber indicator looks similar to the Walther P99 type. There is no magazine safety, so the Caracal will fire a chambered round with its magazine removed.

Analysis

This 9mm pistol offers a compelling option for shooters seeking a reliable and accurate firearm. Its design prioritizes ergonomics, with a grip that fits comfortably in a variety of hand sizes, promoting a natural point of aim. Accuracy is noteworthy, aided by a crisp trigger pull that breaks cleanly at around 5 pounds, enhancing shot placement during both slow and rapid fire. Reliability is another strength, as it performs consistently across a range of ammunition types with minimal malfunctions. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users, and allows for quick follow-up shots. However, maintenance can be somewhat involved, requiring attention to detail for proper cleaning and lubrication. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may pose a challenge due to limited availability in some regions. While it suits many shooters, those prioritizing simplicity in upkeep might find it less ideal.
