About the Gun

Charter revolvers are 100% US made. They utilize a one-piece frame design and a completely blocked hammer system which cannot fire unless the trigger is held in full rear position. Cylinder lock up is in three places instead of two: cylinder stop and ejector rod collar for additional safety, strength and cylinder-to-barrel lock up.

Analysis

This .44 S&W Special revolver offers a compelling option for those seeking a compact, powerful handgun for personal defense. Its accuracy is commendable for a snub-nose design, delivering consistent performance at close to medium ranges. The ergonomics are well-suited for most hand sizes, with a grip that provides a secure hold during firing. Reliability is a strong point, as it functions smoothly under varied conditions with minimal malfunctions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome due to the design, requiring diligent care to prevent wear. Availability of replacement parts may also pose a challenge for some owners. The trigger pull is notably heavy in double-action mode, which could affect precision for less experienced shooters. Felt recoil is significant given the lightweight frame and potent caliber, potentially making follow-up shots more difficult for those unaccustomed to the kick.

Not what they used to be.

The original 3in was better in my opinion , the newer one had trouble right out of the box and needs to go in for warranty .

Small package, big bite

Snappy but manageable when using 180g and 200g loads (e.g., HSM and PMC). Use of heavy Buffalo Bore rounds not recommended, but plenty of selfdefense options on the market—Underwood is my choice. Shoots a few inches low at 10yds, so front sight adjustment (filing) needed. Carries CCW well using OWB holster—mine is an Azula 2-slot. Fun to shoot, but not an all-day range gun.
