Only about 800 of these branded models were produced before Colt cancelled the contract, making those 800 Colt Z40 models somewhat rare.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1998 and lasted only a short time, with manufacturing ceasing in 1999. It was a limited run, making it a rare piece among collectors today.

Analysis

This .40 S&W semi-automatic pistol offers a solid option for shooters seeking a balance of power and control. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges, which suits both defensive and target applications. The ergonomic design provides a comfortable grip for most hand sizes, aiding in prolonged shooting sessions without excessive fatigue. Reliability is a strong point, with the firearm performing well under varied conditions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring meticulous attention to keep it functioning optimally. Availability of replacement parts may pose a challenge, potentially leading to delays in repairs. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 5.5 pounds, which many users find predictable and manageable. Felt recoil is noticeable due to the potent caliber, though it remains controllable with proper technique, making it a viable choice for experienced shooters.
