About the Gun

Colt's Detective Special is considered the first "snubnose" revolver and was intended to be a concealed weapon used by plainclothes police detectives. It was the first short-barreled revolver produced with a modern swing-out frame. Between 1927 and 1993 the gun was produced in four variations, or "issues" that incorporated changes in the frame dimension, sight type, barrel shroud and grip. While the Detective Special was produced primarily for the .38 Special cartridge the "second issue" variant was also chambered for the .32 S&W long (AKA .32 Colt New Police).

Production

Production of this firearm occurred between 1966 and 1972 during its third issue phase. Manufacturing dates can be confirmed through serial number records from that period, ensuring accurate identification of the specific year within this range.

Analysis

This classic double-action revolver in .38 Special caliber offers a blend of historical significance and practical performance. Its compact frame ensures excellent concealability and comfortable carry, while the ergonomics provide a natural grip for most shooters. Accuracy is commendable for a snub-nose design, making it effective for close-range defensive scenarios. Reliability is a key asset, with a robust mechanism that functions well under varied conditions. The trigger pull, both in double and single action, is smooth with a predictable break, though it may feel heavy for some users at around 10-12 pounds in double action. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for experienced shooters but potentially sharp for novices due to the lightweight frame. On the downside, maintenance can be intricate, requiring attention to timing issues. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may pose challenges, and the design might not suit those preferring modern features like higher capacity.
