About the Gun

The Colt Single Action Army was designed for the US government service revolver trials of 1873 and was ultimately adopted as the standard military service revolver. A venerable single-action six-shooter, the gun is also known as the Colt .45 and sometimes as The Equalizer or Colt Peacekeeper. Single Action Army revolvers are categorized by generation. The first generation revolvers were produced between 1873 and 1940. Second Generation Colts were produced from 1956 to 1974. The Third Generation ran from 1976 until 1982 and became a limited-issue product. In 1994, production resumed and is known either as 'Late Third Generation' or sometimes Fourth Generation.

Production

Production of this firearm falls within the Third Generation period, spanning from 1976 to 1982, with a resumption from 1994 to the present. Specific dates depend on the serial number, which can be verified through manufacturer records for precise determination.

Analysis

This iconic revolver, chambered in a powerful cartridge, offers a blend of historical significance and practical performance. Its accuracy is commendable for a design of its era, delivering consistent groupings at moderate ranges when handled with skill. The ergonomics are well-suited for most users, with a grip that feels natural and aids in control during firing. Reliability is a hallmark, as the robust mechanism withstands regular use with proper care. However, maintenance can be demanding, requiring meticulous attention to keep the action smooth and prevent wear. Parts availability poses a challenge, often necessitating specialized sourcing for repairs. The trigger pull is crisp but can feel heavy to some, while the felt recoil is substantial, potentially uncomfortable for less experienced shooters. Overall, it remains a solid choice for enthusiasts who value tradition, though it may not suit everyone’s practical needs.
