About the Gun

Detonics is historically recognized as the innovator of the compact 1911 as a new design and not a cut down version of a full size handgun. The original architecture for the Detonics Combat Master began in the 1960’s, the heart of which is its tri-coil captive recoil spring and lack of a grip safety.

Production

Production of this firearm began in the late 1970s, with manufacturing primarily occurring through the 1980s. Most units were crafted during this period by a small Seattle-based company before production ceased in the early 1990s due to financial challenges.

Analysis

This compact .45 Auto pistol offers a robust design tailored for concealed carry and close-quarters use. Its accuracy is commendable, with a tight grouping at typical defensive ranges, thanks to a well-engineered barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, the grip fits most hand sizes comfortably, providing a secure hold during rapid fire. Reliability is a strong point, as it cycles consistently with various ammunition types under standard conditions. The trigger pull is crisp, averaging around 4.5 pounds, which aids in precise shot placement. However, felt recoil is noticeable due to the lightweight frame, potentially challenging for newer shooters. On the downside, maintenance can be cumbersome, requiring specific tools for disassembly. Additionally, sourcing replacement parts may prove difficult, limiting long-term support. While it serves well for experienced users, those prioritizing ease of upkeep or minimal kick might explore other options.
