About the Gun

The Glock 17 in its initial three generations established the core striker-fired, Safe Action operating system with a polymer frame, high-capacity magazine, and simple controls that prioritized reliability and ease of maintenance. These models feature a barrel with polygonal rifling, which contributes to reduced fouling, consistent bullet stabilization, and relatively low bore wear over extended use. Gen1 models featured a uniform pebble texture on the grip for basic traction, while Gen2 added targeted checkering on the front and back straps to enhance handling without altering the overall frame geometry. Gen3 incorporated finger grooves on the front strap, thumb rests on the sides, and an accessory rail on the dust cover to accommodate lights or other devices, reflecting incremental responses to user feedback and accessory demands over the production span from the early 1980s into the 2000s. These early versions share the same fundamental mechanics and proved durable in law enforcement, military, and civilian applications worldwide.

Production

The Gen3 variant began production in 1998 and is currently ongoing.

Analysis

The first three generations of the Glock 17 maintain strong compatibility in major components, allowing parts interchangeability in many cases while offering slight handling variations through grip texture and frame features. The polygonal rifling used in the barrel across these generations supports reliable performance with a variety of ammunition types and contributes to the platform's reputation for consistent accuracy in practical shooting distances. Gen1 examples often carry collector interest due to their historical role in introducing the design, though functional performance remains consistent across the group with no significant reliability differences reported in standard use. Gen2 provides a middle ground with improved grip traction over Gen1 without the added contours of Gen3, which some users find preferable for a flatter front strap feel. Gen3's additions like the rail and finger grooves expanded practical utility for mounted accessories and ergonomics, contributing to its prolonged production and availability in the secondary market. Overall, these variants continue to function reliably in their original configurations, with market preferences varying based on condition, originality, and individual grip fit rather than inherent superiority in one over the others.

My first Glock
By Txmoto on 01 Dec 2020
I bought my first Glock 17 in 1988, back when they were still relatively new and most Police Departments were still carrying revolvers. I carried the 17 for 8 years as my duty gun. I've owned one sort of Glock or another ever since.

Dependable

Accurate and extremely reliable, this is a no nonsense, no frills, service grade weapon. While still relevant mechanically, its dated ergonomics have received only minor updates over the last 30 years. A good option for most shooters, this gun is has a huge variety of aftermarket accessories and upgrades available. However, it is bracketed by a wide array of top flight competitors offering superior ergonomics and additional features, often at a lower price.

The standard for a nice all around handgun. Fits most and is so reliable.
