About the Gun

The success of HKs G3 Automatic Rifle led to the desire for the company to produce handguns. An offshoot of the G3 program was to produce a handgun that featured the roller locking system that was so successful in the G3. The P9 was that pistol. The P9S was a double-action derivative of the P9, easily identified by the trigger guard and the position of the trigger lever. The trigger guard was altered in the 1970s to suit the fashionable two-handed grip, acquiring a reverse curve in the front edge.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1976 and continued until 1978 for the specific variant in the larger caliber. It was manufactured during this limited period before being discontinued, making it a rare piece from that era.

Analysis

This .45 Auto pistol from a renowned German manufacturer showcases notable strengths that appeal to many shooters. Its accuracy is commendable, delivering consistent performance at typical handgun ranges, thanks to a well-designed barrel and sight system. Ergonomically, the grip fits comfortably in most hands, aiding control during extended shooting sessions. Reliability is another asset, with the firearm functioning dependably under varied conditions when properly maintained. However, maintenance can be somewhat cumbersome, requiring more attention to detail than some modern designs. Parts availability may also pose a challenge, as sourcing replacements can be difficult compared to more common platforms. The trigger pull is smooth but on the heavier side, which might not suit all users, especially those preferring lighter pulls. Felt recoil is manageable for a .45, though it can feel pronounced for shooters unaccustomed to larger calibers, necessitating practice for mastery.
