About the Gun

The Heritage Roscoe is a Brazilian-built revival of the discontinued Taurus Model 85 five-shot revolver. It uses the same Brazilian-made carbon-steel frame with alloy-steel barrel and fluted cylinder. It retains the Model 85’s transfer-bar ignition, +P chambering, exposed hammer, and fixed sights, but features a high-polish blued finish and checkered wood grips for a retro appearance. Mechanically and dimensionally, it is essentially a continuation of the discontinued Taurus 85 platform, distributed under the Heritage brand at a lower retail price point than current Smith & Wesson or Ruger equivalents.

Analysis

This reimagined version of the Taurus Model 85 delivers consistent reliability, 2-3 inch defensive accuracy at typical carry distances, and a smooth if heavy double-action trigger, all in a lightweight all-steel package with retro blued finish and wood grips. Recoil is stout but controllable; fit and finish are impressive for the economical price. Introduced to move Heritage beyond rimfire realm, it targets budget-conscious concealed carriers, revolver traditionalists, and collectors who want a simple, pocketable detective-special lookalike without paying J-frame or Colt premiums.
