Analysis

The P220 Compact provided a more concealable .45 Auto option than the P220 Carry by shortening both the slide/barrel assembly and the grip frame, resulting in reduced overall height while maintaining the platform’s short-recoil locked-breech operation and accuracy. Beavertail versions improved hand positioning and recoil control for some shooters, whereas non-beavertail railed models prioritized a lower profile for deeper concealment. This design succeeded the P245 and offered a balance between capacity and size during the late 2000s to mid-2010s, when metal-frame pistols remained relevant before the widespread adoption of polymer striker-fired designs. Production volumes stayed modest due to the trade-off in grip length and magazine capacity.
