About the Gun

The modern Sig Sauer pistol story began with the P220. Initially offered in several centerfire calibers in 1976, all but the .45 ACP chambering were eventually dropped. The .45 ACP P220 went on to become recognized as one of 'the most accurate 45s right out of the box.' Since that time the P220 has earned an enviable record in hot spots around the world. Today the P220 features a stainless steel slide machined from bar stock and coated with a durable, wear-resistant Nitron finish or natural stainless finish, light-weight alloy frame with integral accessory rail, and the Sig Sauer four-point safety system of decocking lever, patented automatic firing pin safety block, safety intercept notch, and trigger bar disconnector.

Production

Production of this specific model with a two-tone finish and natural stainless slide began in the early 2000s. It was manufactured primarily between 2005 and 2015, though limited runs may have occurred outside this range depending on market demand.

Analysis

This single-action-only pistol in .45 Auto caliber delivers commendable accuracy, thanks to its crisp trigger pull, which breaks cleanly at around 5 pounds, facilitating precise shot placement. The ergonomics are well-suited for most hand sizes, with a grip that promotes a natural point of aim and solid control during firing. Reliability is a strong point, as it consistently performs under varied conditions with proper care. Felt recoil is manageable for a .45, though it may feel pronounced for newer shooters unaccustomed to the cartridge’s power. On the downside, maintenance can be somewhat intricate, requiring attention to detail for disassembly and cleaning. Availability of replacement parts may pose challenges in some regions, potentially delaying repairs. Additionally, the single-action design might not suit all users, particularly those prioritizing a double-action option for added safety in carry scenarios.
