About the Gun

The modern Sig Sauer pistol story began with the P220. Initially offered in several centerfire calibers in 1976, all but the .45 ACP chambering were eventually dropped. The .45 ACP P220 went on to become recognized as one of 'the most accurate 45s right out of the box.' Since that time the P220 has earned an enviable record in hot spots around the world. Today the P220 features a stainless steel slide machined from bar stock and coated with a durable, wear-resistant Nitron finish or natural stainless finish, light-weight alloy frame with integral accessory rail, and the Sig Sauer four-point safety system of decocking lever, patented automatic firing pin safety block, safety intercept notch, and trigger bar disconnector.

Production

Analysis

This .45 Auto pistol demonstrates notable precision, often delivering tight groupings at moderate ranges, making it a solid choice for target shooting and defensive use. Its ergonomic design offers a comfortable grip for most hand sizes, reducing fatigue during extended sessions. Reliability is a strong point, with consistent performance even under varied conditions, provided regular maintenance is performed. However, upkeep can be somewhat demanding, as the all-steel construction requires diligent care to prevent wear or corrosion. Availability of replacement parts may pose a challenge, potentially delaying repairs for some owners. The trigger pull is smooth and predictable, averaging around 5 pounds in single-action mode, which aids in maintaining accuracy. Felt recoil is manageable for experienced shooters, though those unaccustomed to larger calibers might find it somewhat stout, necessitating practice to control follow-up shots effectively.

best gun all around

I bought this SIG P220ST in 2002, it was my only gun for 16 years and I became an expert with it. I can shoot left-handed or right-handed just as well at 25 yards, using either hand I can put 30 rounds inside of a 3" group at 25 yards. 30 rounds because I have 6 magazines which I load 5 rounds in each.. that is my typical plinking setup. After every magazine, I switch hands. In any case, I've shot over 100,000 rounds through this gun over the years, had to replace the barrel once at about 75,000 rounds because I can tell it was off. I sent the gun back to SIG in 2012 replace the barrel and change the controls and trigger to nickel, one of the additional services that they offer is a accurizing option where they polish the ramp in the barrel, crown the barrel at 15 degrees, lighten the SA trigger and shorten the reset. that helped and improved my grouping but I'm telling you that I could do the same even if I didn't get that service. Best, most comfortable and reliable gun.
