Analysis

This 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a notable design from its era, offers several commendable features for shooters seeking a reliable sidearm. Its accuracy is consistent, particularly at moderate ranges, making it suitable for both target practice and defensive use. The ergonomics are well-thought-out, with a grip that accommodates a variety of hand sizes, providing a secure hold during operation. Reliability is another strong point, as it performs dependably under typical conditions with proper care. However, maintenance can be somewhat demanding, requiring regular attention to ensure optimal function. Availability of replacement parts may also pose a challenge for some owners, as they are not as readily sourced as for more modern designs. The trigger pull is smooth but on the heavier side, which might not suit all preferences. Felt recoil is moderate, manageable for most users with adequate training and experience.

An Outstanding Firearm

I have owned a 39-2 for over 30 years. For many of those years, it was my preferred carry gun. I have put thousands of rounds through this gun. It's function and reliability has been stellar. The model 39 was the basis for many generation of Smith&Wesson's Wonder 9's. If you can pick one up in good condition on the used market it is well worth it..
