Analysis

The Smith & Wesson Model 4004 was a short-lived variant in the 4000-series .40 S&W lineup, introduced as part of the initial wave of third-generation pistols adapted from the 5900-series 9mm platform following the 1990 debut of the .40 S&W cartridge. Production ran for a very limited period, generally documented as 1991–1992, with some sources indicating even narrower runs or batch production that resulted in significantly lower quantities compared to other 4000-series models. The Model 4004 did not receive a TSW (Tactical Smith & Wesson) update with accessory rail or other late-1990s revisions, unlike the 4003TSW or 4006TSW. The pistol shares full parts interchangeability with other alloy-framed 4000-series guns like the 4003 in most major components, though the blued slide may show finish differences over time compared to stainless versions. It represents one of the early, less common attempts to diversify finishes and pricing within the emerging .40 S&W duty handgun category before the market shifted toward polymer frames and striker-fired designs.
