Analysis

The Smith & Wesson Model 4040PD (also marked "AirLite PD" on the slide) utilized a scandium alloy frame paired with a carbon steel slide and a 3.5-inch barrel. It features a single-stack 7-round magazine, double-action/single-action mechanism with a fully bobbed hammer, Novak Lo-Mount Carry three-dot fixed sights, Hogue rubber grips, and a matte black finish. Production occurred in the final years of third-generation manufacturing as Smith & Wesson explored lightweight materials for concealed carry amid competition from polymer designs. The scandium frame aimed to reduce weight for easier all-day carry while retaining third-gen durability, though the combination contributed to increased felt recoil with standard .40 S&W loads.
