Analysis

The Smith & Wesson Model 4053TSW is the Tactical variant of the compact DAO .40 S&W series, updating the base 4053 with Tactical Smith & Wesson features including a double-stack 9-round magazine capacity (on a medium frame), reversible magazine catch, lengthened slide and frame rails for added support, extended lock time to moderate felt recoil, and fixed 3-dot Novak Lo-Mount Carry sights. Early production (1997–1999) often lacked the frame-mounted accessory rail (pre-rail transitional variants), while later runs (around 2002–2006) incorporated the rail in many configurations, along with a bobbed hammer and satin stainless finish on the alloy frame/stainless slide construction. Total production spanned approximately 1997 to 2006, with the TSW updates addressing evolving law enforcement and tactical needs for mounting options and improved durability in compact form during the later third-generation era. The design retained the true DAO action with no external manual safety or decocker, relying on the internal firing pin block and consistent long trigger pull for operation.
