About the Gun

This was S&W's first .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol. All steel construction made for a relatively heavy but very stable and accurate design. This classic model has remained in production since it was introduced in 1957. The design was revised in 1994 when hardwood grips replaced walnut. The original S&W type micro-adjustable rear sight was replaced with a Millett design, and the top of the frame was drilled and tapped to receive optical-sight mounts.

Production

Production of this firearm began in 1957 and continues to the present day, with various updates over the years. Specific models with these features were primarily manufactured from the late 1950s through the 1990s, though limited runs may still occur.

Analysis

This .22 LR semi-automatic pistol is a benchmark for precision target shooting, offering exceptional accuracy due to its finely tuned barrel and adjustable sights. The ergonomics are well-suited for extended range sessions, with a grip that fits comfortably in most hands, promoting a natural shooting stance. Reliability is a strong point, as it cycles consistently with a variety of ammunition, provided it’s kept clean. The trigger pull is notably crisp and light, often measuring around 2.5 to 3 pounds, which aids in maintaining shot placement. Felt recoil is minimal, making it ideal for beginners and seasoned shooters alike. However, maintenance can be demanding, requiring regular disassembly and care to prevent malfunctions. Parts availability may pose challenges for some owners, as replacements are not always readily accessible. Additionally, the design might not suit those prioritizing concealability over performance.
